Week of action tackles priorities and crime in Wing South                                                                   (This page posted on 2.8.10)

The neighbourhood policing team in Wing South carried out a week of action to tackle a number of issues including the number one priority, speeding, for local residents.

The week of action took place between Monday 19 and Sunday 25 July 2010. A recent survey identified speeding as the main concern for people living in the Wing South area.

The neighbourhood team were out in force all week to address this issue, along with support from the Priority Crime Team, Roads Policing Department, Safer Roads Partnership, Taxi Licensing Officer, Trading Standards and volunteers.

Details of activities and results during the week:

Monday

Speed enforcement operations were carried out across the Wing South neighbourhood. Four different sites were covered in Ivinghoe, Pitstone, Dagnall and Edlesborough. The majority of drivers were within the speed limits, however around 12 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) were issued to drivers for speeding. Advice was also given to a number of drivers who were just above the speed limit. The aim of the operation was to educate drivers about their speeding and abiding by the limit, rather than to prosecute all offences.

Tuesday

Targeted patrols were carried out in the neighbourhoods recently affected by burglaries. This involved erecting signs to educate people that Smartwater DNA is being used across Wing South and giving residents advice about crime prevention actions they could take to reduce the risk of being targeted by criminals. Also, in conjunction with the Priority Crime Team, a number of suspected burglary offenders were targeted; numerous addresses were visited and this resulted in the arrest of one individual for burglary in the Wing area. The individual is now on police bail pending further enquiries.

Wednesday

Community Speedwatch was conducted in the neighbourhood by officers and a volunteer and this allowed officers to demonstrate to road users that they may be exceeding the speed limit and also allowed them to collect data to assist when considering future speed enforcement operations, the placement of speed cameras, and other road safety measures. An Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) operation was carried out in two locations in the area; one in Pitstone, on the border with Hertfordshire, and another in Edlesborough, on the border with Bedfordshire. Between the two sites, over 325 vehicles registrations were read by the ANPR system, of which over 10 vehicles came back as an interest to the police for various matters including insurance and licence enquiries and intelligence.

Thursday

An ANPR operation was carried out outside Cottesloe School for a number of hours with support from the Roads Policing Department, Safer Roads Partnership and Taxi Licensing Officer. Over 40 FPNs were issued to drivers for various offences including using their mobile phone while driving and not wearing seatbelts. Two arrests were made for possession of cannabis and one man was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. A further arrest was made for a man who was wanted on warrant.

Friday

Licensing checks were carried out in public houses across the neighbourhood, with officers talking to designated premises supervisors at each location, ensuring a close working relationship continued with the individuals and their businesses. Anti-social behaviour patrols were also conducted and a number of young people were spoken to. Alcohol was seized from anyone found under-age. Letters have been sent to the parents of any individuals who were acting in an unacceptable manner.

Saturday

Officers carried out patrols preventing anti-social behaviour and targeting serious acquisitive crime (burglary, vehicle offences, robbery etc). During the patrols officers were deployed to deal with an operational incident, which ended in the Wing area.

Sunday

High visibility patrols were carried out across the beauty spot area around Wing. A Have Your Say meeting took place in Marsworth where residents were able to discuss any local issues or concerns they may have. Officers took the opportunity to give crime prevention advice, including reminding residents not to leave any items of value on display in parked vehicles and crime prevention advice to those who use the beauty spot car parks.

Neighbourhood Sgt Paul Cladingboel, said: "Overall, this has been a really positive exercise for the Wing South area and something we would like to run again in the future.

"PC Jared Levens, Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) Tina Hobson and Jackie Dodson, as well as their colleagues from across the Aylesbury Vale and partner agencies, have worked really hard to make this a productive week. Hopefully residents will have appreciated our presence and the work to tackle the neighbourhood priority and local concerns."
